The holidays are over. You enjoyed thoroughly and had a great time with family and friends. But now you are sitting at home and staring at a pile of decorations. Glittering hangings and shiny buntings. Those amazingly beautiful décor items that brought so much joy to the surrounding just week ago. But now, they are just lying there, with nowhere to go.
It is easy to let this cleanup slide away and throw these holiday décor items right in the bin. But they did cost you money. And yes, you will be needing them again. So, trust me and take some time now to declutter and organize your seasonal décor. This will make your life so much easier when the next holiday season rolls around. Here are some of my own tried and tested simple tips on how to organize and store seasonal decor as part of the post-holiday decluttering.

Why Do You Need to Declutter and Organize After the Holidays?
We all know that unpacking a tangled mess of lights or digging through random boxes for that one ornament is no fun.
A little effort now, will save you a ton of stress later.
Moreover, we all love to have a tidy home. One that is ready to roll into the New Year without any leftover holiday chaos.
So, go ahead and try some of my tips for holiday decluttering.
Take a Good Look At Your Decorations
Group the Ones Which You Actually Use
Before you even think about packing things up, first stop and ask yourself:
• Did I use this decoration this year?
• Is it still in good shape?
• Do I actually like it anymore?
There is a probable chance that the answer to some of these questions may be a "no". Hence, it is time to let it go.
You can donate the good stuff to someone who will appreciate it. And if something is broken or torn beyond repair, just toss them out.
Trust me, you will not miss it the next year.
Sort Things into Categories
Group your décor by type—tree ornaments, outdoor lights, wreaths, and so on. This makes it way easier to figure out what you have and what needs to go where.
Find Storage That Works
Clear Bins Are Your Best Friend
Invest in clear, sturdy storage bins.
They are great for keeping dust, moisture, and bugs out of your decorations. Plus, you can see what’s inside without opening every box.
Game changer!
Get Fancy (But Not Too Fancy)
You don’t need to spend a fortune, but a few specialty storage solutions can make your life easier:
• Ornament Boxes: These come with little compartments to keep your baubles safe and unbroken.
• Light Reels: Wrap your lights around these to avoid the dreaded tangle. (A piece of cardboard works just as well if you’re on a budget!)
• Wreath Bags: Protect those beautiful wreaths from getting squished or dusty.
Label Everything
Grab a marker or some cute labels and write down exactly what’s in each bin. Trust me, "Miscellaneous Christmas Stuff" won’t help you next year. Be specific—something like "Tree Ornaments – Red and Gold" will make your future self so happy.

Get Creative with Storage Space
Use What You Have
Not everyone has a massive storage room, and that’s okay. Use vertical shelving in your garage or basement to stack bins neatly.
No garage?
Under-bed storage containers can work wonders for flatter items like ribbons or garlands.
Nest Smaller Items
Save space by putting smaller decorations inside larger ones. For example, you can store tiny ornaments in a decorative tin or even inside a sturdy stocking.
Protect Your Décor Items
Wrap It Up Right
Delicate ornaments need some love. Wrap them in bubble wrap, tissue paper, or even reusable cloth.
Don’t use newspaper, though. The ink can transfer and ruin your treasures.
Keep It Cool
Store your decorations somewhere that isn’t exposed to extreme heat, cold, or humidity. A closet or storage room inside your home is ideal.
Don’t Overpack
Stuffing everything into one giant bin might seem efficient, but it’s a recipe for broken decorations. Give your items some breathing room!
Plan Ahead for Next Year
Snap a Pic
Before you start packing, take a picture of how you set things up this year.
This is a quick and easy reference. It will help you when you try and remember how everything looked so good the previous year.
Color-Code Your Storage
There are people who celebrate multiple holidays every year. In that case, you should assign each one its own color.
For example, red bins for storing Christmas décor, orange for organizing Halloween decor, and green for arranging St. Patrick’s Day décor items.
This way you will know exactly what to grab at the specific holiday without opening every box and checking for items.
Keep a Simple Inventory
You do not need to go overboard. It is best to jot down a quick list of what you have can save you from buying duplicates next year.
Even snapping a photo of each bin’s contents can work.
